What you need to know about the “Try That In A Small Town” controversy after CMT removes a Jason Aldean video

The song video “Try That In A Small Town” by Jason Aldean, which received negative feedback following its Friday premiere, is no longer being aired on Country song Television.

After Aldean, who survived a horrific massacre while performing in 2017, received criticism for the song because some thought it supported lynching and gun violence, the network decided not to air the music video.

Online sceptics pointed out the song lyrics shortly after the video’s debut as typical of songs that inflame gun violence and lynching emotions in many of his rural and small-town fan base’s members.

Spit on an officer, curse at him. Step on the flag and set it ablaze. Absolutely, you believe you’re tough. Try that in a small town first, though. See how far you can travel on the road. Around here, we look after our own. You step over that queue, and it won’t be long. I advise against doing so so that you can learn. Try that in a tiny town, Aldean sings.

The Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, where a Black man named Henry Choate, 18, was lynched in 1927, was mentioned by viewers as another location where scenes in the film were shot. The historic Columbia Race Riot took place there in 1946, as well.

Using a lengthy explanation about what the song means to him, Aldean responded to the criticism on Twitter on Tuesday. It’s over the top, he continued, “while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music.”
